Austin may be the Live Music Capital of the world, but it could easily be called the Festival Capital as well. Austin plays host to many great festivals annually. From Austin City Limits to South by South West (SXSW), this year thousands of people will spend their spring, summer and fall days enjoying Austin’s one-of-a-kind atmosphere. If you are heading out to a festival or event, be sure to keep these things in mind when you pack your bag for a day of fun!
Bring Lots of Sunscreen
Each year an estimated 3.3 million people are treated for skin cancer in the United States. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Early prevention is key to making sure you stay healthy and avoid long-term damage to your skin. Tests involving sunscreen indicate that wearing sunscreen can significantly reduce the chance of developing skin cancer later on. Sunscreen can also slow down the development of wrinkles and signs of prematurely aging skin.
Pack Extra Water
Summer days can often be brutal. As your body copes with the heat, often times people become dehydrated which can lead to serious medical issues if left unchecked. Be sure to stay hydrated and pack extra water bottles. Pack one more than you think you will need just to be on the safe side.
(Note: If you are bringing a pet, be sure to bring plenty of water for your furry friend. Dehydration can cause serious health problems for your pet.)
Eye protection is crucial for maintaining good vision, especially on bright sunny days. On average, Austin has approximately 228 sunny days each year. Prolonged exposure to the sun can severely damage your eyes in the future. Left unchecked, eyes that are exposed to lots of sunlight can develop cataracts and glaucoma. Be sure to pick up a pair of sunglasses with UV protection when heading out to your favorite festival.
Prepare For All Weather
While Austin has plenty of sunny days, sunshine is not always guaranteed. Be sure to pack a light rain jacket or poncho in case of inclement weather. Umbrellas also work but can be cumbersome and obstruct the view of your fellow festivalgoers. Keep your surroundings in mind and plan appropriately.
Bring plenty Of Snacks (If Permitted)
Festivals often have vendors and food available. However, they may not always be the most healthy or energizing. If the festival you’re attending permits the entry of snacks, be sure to bring along something that will keep you nourished and energized the entire day. Beef jerky is a great source of protein and energy, as long as you are sure to avoid sodium and sugar-filled brands. Another great option is mixed nuts and trail mix. Mixes that contain almonds and pistachios provide a protein punch that can keep you energized!
For any festival, planning and preparing can ensure you have the best possible experience and keep you going well into the waning hours!
