St. David’s Medical Center volunteers recently awarded 18 scholarships, totaling $110,000, to 18 graduate-level students who are working toward a degree in the medical field. The St. David’s Medical Center Healthcare Volunteers program, which was established in 1955, is funded with profits from the volunteers’ gift shop, located at the facility.
Funds raised included a special scholarship fund in honor of the late president of the St. David’s Medical Center Healthcare Volunteers, Deborah Albers, who passed away last fall.
A scholarship committee evaluates applicants based on financial need, grades, references and an essay. Finalists are required to participate in interviews.
Each scholarship recipient received $6,000. They represent schools across Texas, including Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University, The University of Texas at Austin, The University of Texas at San Antonio, Baylor College of Medicine, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso.
