Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children ages one to 13, though most of these deaths can be prevented through proper use of child safety seats. Those who properly use a car seat reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent; yet, nearly 73 percent of child restraints are not installed or used correctly.

The Level II Trauma Center located at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center is pleased to collaborate with the Safe Riders Child Safety Seat Distribution and Education Program to distribute complimentary car seats and conduct monthly car seat safety classes for low-income families.

Safe Riders is a grant-funded program sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation. Safe Riders has provided child passenger safety program leadership in Texas since the passage of Texas’ first seat belt law in 1985, partnering with community organizations and hospitals across the state to promote car seat safety in Texas.

St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center’s collaboration with Safe Riders allows parents in Williamson County to attend a one-hour class to learn how to properly install and use a car seat. Additionally, it provides complimentary car seats, as well as additional education opportunities. The facility also has a certified child passenger safety technician on staff to assist families.
