In recognition of American Heart Month and in partnership with the American Heart Association’s Little Hats, Big Hearts™ program, St. David’s HealthCare is providing handmade red hats to all babies born at St. David’s HealthCare hospitals during the month of February.
Thousands of red hats, knitted and crocheted by community volunteers, raise awareness for heart disease—the number one killer of Americans—and congenital heart defects, which affect at least 40,000 babies each year. The program encourages moms to live heart-healthy lives and to help their children do the same.
This is the second year for Little Hats, Big Hearts in Austin. The program began in Chicago in 2014 and has since expanded to hospitals nationwide.
The Austin American-Statesman recently wrote about congenital heart defects and the Little Hats, Big Hearts program.
